Subject Description

This subject forms an introduction to the history of the Christian Church from the 2nd to the 15th centuries. Topics will include the apostolic tradition, the rise of Christianity, the edict of Constantine, monasticism in the West, the rise of papal power and relations between Church and state, heresy and schim in the Christian Church, the medieval Church, and the work of early reformers such as Wycliffe and Hus.

Generic Skills

  • demonstrate an awareness of the fundamental skills and approaches used in church history and systematic theology;

  • be able to locate and use appropriate resources for church history and systematic theology in the library and on the internet;

  • be able to research, document and write an analytical essay on a topic in church history or systematic theology using primary and secondary sources and in an acceptable format;

  • begin to develop the skills necessary for theological reflection.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words, which may include a 1-hour examination equivalent to 1000 words.
