Subject Description

This subject will introduce students to the literature, history and geography of ancient Israel, and to exegetical method through the use of selected texts from the Hebrew Bible (often called the Old Testament). Topics will include the following: the Pentateuch, prophecy, the historical literature, wisdom literature and Psalms, the history of Israel, and contemporary methods in reading Old Testament texts. Students who complete this subject should be able to understand the diversity of the traditions in the Hebrew Bible and exegete selected texts.

Generic Skills

  • demonstrate an awareness of the fundamental skills and approaches used in church history and systematic theology;

  • be able to locate and use appropriate resources for church history and systematic theology in the library and on the internet;

  • be able to research, document and write an analytical essay on a topic in church history or systematic theology using primary and secondary sources and in an acceptable format;

  • begin to develop the skills necessary for theological reflection.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words, which may include a 1-hour examination equivalent to 1000 words.
