920-146 MCD-Introduction to the New Testament

This subject will introduce students to the literature and history of the early Christian Church and to exegetical method through the use of selected texts from the New Testament. Topics will include the canon of the New Testament, the historical and social world of the New Testament era, Synoptic studies (particularly the gospel of Mark), and critical exegetical method. Students who complete this subject should be able to understand the processes which produced the New Testament writings, identify sources and traditions within the New Testament, and use contemporary methods in New Testament exegesis.

• demonstrate an awareness of the fundamental skills and approaches used in church history and systematic theology;

• be able to locate and use appropriate resources for church history and systematic theology in the library and on the internet;

• be able to research, document and write an analytical essay on a topic in church history or systematic theology using primary and secondary sources and in an acceptable format;

• begin to develop the skills necessary for theological reflection.

Written work totalling 4000 words, which may include a 1-hour examination equivalent to 1000 words.
