Subject Description

This subject will introduce students to the consideration of what theology is and how it may be done. Consideration will be given to the history, aims, resources, methods, themes, contexts and divisions of Christian systematic theology. Topics to be covered will include an historical survey of theological method, the relationship between theology and other disciplines, the living tradition of the Christian community, and the insights of other religious traditions. Students who complete this subject should be able to understand the major areas of Christian belief and identify the types and methods of systematic theology.

Generic Skills

  • demonstrate an awareness of the fundamental skills and approaches used in church history and systematic theology;

  • be able to locate and use appropriate resources for church history and systematic theology in the library and on the internet;

  • be able to research, document and write an analytical essay on a topic in church history or systematic theology using primary and secondary sources and in an acceptable format;

  • begin to develop the skills necessary for theological reflection.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words, which may include a 1-hour examination equivalent to 1000 words.
