Subject Description

This subject examines the nature of space and light in theatre as fundamental components of the medium. Students will develop an understanding of the way the dynamics and semiotics of space and light function both within the performance site and external to it. Key concepts of theatre design and lighting, theatre architecture and virtual reconstructions, prominent scenographers, styles and techniques of design will be examined in theory and practice. Assessment includes a collaborative design presentation for a designated performance.

Assessment

Work equivalent to 4000 words for 3rd year, 5000 words for 4th year comprising a research essay of 2000 words for 3rd year, 3000 words for 4th year 50% (due at the end of semester), a design analysis is presented orally and in written form of 750 words 20% (due during the semester), and a collaborative design project to be presented in model, drawing, digital or some other format of 1250 words 30% (due during examination period). There is a hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% attendance.
