Subject Description

This subject is a study of the representation of women in art, film, theatre and writing. Students of this subject will explore a variety of feminist critical strategies in the study of historical and contemporary works created by both male and female artists. The subject will be taught by specialists from each of the creative arts areas and students will be required to submit work that covers more than one art form.

Generic Skills

  • research through competent use of the library and other information sources, and through defining areas of enquiry and methods of research;

  • demonstrate time management, independent organization and planning;

  • communicate knowledge in oral, written and/or creative form;

  • demonstrate critical self-awareness in the presentation and communication of an argument and forming judgements from conflicting points of view;

  • think critically and analyse through recommended reading, essay writing and tutorial discussion and by determining the strength of an argument or approach to performance.

Assessment

Written work equivalent to a total of 4000 words, including an essay of 2000 words 50% (due at the end of semester) and class participation and presentation including a one page summary 10%, and a seminar paper of 1600 words 40% (due in class through individual negotiation). A hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% attendance is required.
