760-230 Dance & Movement in Contemporary Theatre

Formerly available as 760-358. Students who have completed 760-358 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. A quota of 40 students applies.

Usually 12.5 points first-year theatre studies.

This subject incorporates a study of dance and movement in contemporary theatrical performance giving attention to different cultural traditions and the pivotal transitions which have led to the evolution of new genres in the 20th century. The emphasis will be on how theatrical ideas and texts are translated into movement and how physicalised theatre and contemporary dance such as Butoh, German Tanztheater and Physical Theatre challenge traditional representational modes. Workshops will investigate the interplay between spoken text and movement. Minimum 80% attendance (hurdle requirement).

An essay equivalent to 3000 words 75% (due in week 8 of semester); a group devised performance work of 4 to 5 minutes duration 10% (due 5 days after semester); documentation of practical workshops equivalent to 1000 words 15% (due 10 days after the end of semester). Minimum 80% attendance (hurdle requirement).
