Subject Description | This subject provides a cross-disciplinary examination of selected schools of thought, aesthetic constructs and ideologies manifested in pre-20th century western art. Themes to be addressed will be drawn from the following categories: classicism, art and reason, art and romantic passion, links between philosophical speculation and culture, art of antiquity, mythology, rituals and social context, patronage and classical transformations in culture, and the conditions and politics of realism in the creative arts. |

Assessment | A research project of 2000 words 50% (due one week after end of semester), a seminar presentation, and written paper of 1000 words 25% (due one week after presentation), and two class tests of 500 words each, 25% (one due mid semester and one at end of semester). A hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% attendance required. |
