Subject Description

This subject is an introduction to theatre studies. It critically examines the theory/practice relationship in performance studies. It emphasises the processes involved in the translation of text into performance through the voice and body of the actor and the creation of 'mise en scene'.

Generic Skills

  • be able to undertake research through competent use of the library and other information sources and through investigating performance as an enquiry and method of research;

  • be able to undertake time management, independent organization and planning through performance making;

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words comprising a group devised performance 30% (due one week after the end of semester), a critical evaluation of a performance totalling 1500 words 30% (due mid semester), a 1-hour written class test 30% (due one week after the end of semester) and regular participation in tutorials and workshops 10%. A hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% workshop attendance required.
