Subject Description

In this subject students are required to develop a self-initiated body of work, focusing upon experimentation with a variety of materials, procedures and methodologies in an open studio situation. In consultation with staff, students are encouraged to further expand their own program by bringing a greater level of critical evaluation to the conceptual, aesthetic and technical considerations in their work. Students are required to articulate, discuss and analyse their work in regular individual and group tutorials and to be familiar with the historical precedents and contemporary influences that inform their work. Students are expected to develop independent work strategies and a mature studio practice with sustained output. As part of the studio subject students are required to participate in Professional Practice. These weekly, discussion-based sessions are designed to develop the students' understanding and appreciation of local and international contemporary art practice and in turn how they might participate in these context(s).

Assessment

Assessment is based on a substantial folio of work demonstrating the range of the student's activities during the semester, including any group of finished works, support work, drawings, journals/sketchbooks, etc. and other material the student chooses to submit (90%). A Professional Practice journal that reflects, develops and evaluates the information and activities covered in the semester together with any other information relevant to the subject (10%).
