Subject Description | Walter Benjamin called Paris the capital of the 19th century. This subject examines some of the ways in which Paris was a centre for musical activity in the 19th century. It looks at the importance of music criticism, music societies, theatres/companies and exhibitions. Repertoire is examined from within social and cultural contexts. On completion of this subject, students should have developed (a) a capacity for independent critical thought (b) high-level cognitive skills (c) an openness to new ideas (d) knowledge, skills and practices which provide a basis for independent critical inquiry and research-based writing. |
Assessment | Journal entries (30%); essay 2500-3000 words (50%); listening test of one hour (20%). |
