Prerequisites

Normally a result of H2A or above in 740-359 Musicological Research Method 1 and permission of the Dean. Students are required to submit a written dissertation proposal with a select bibliography to the coordinator before being allowed to enrol in the subject.

Subject Description

Students will conceive, plan and execute a substantial research project; demonstrate a capacity to think originally and independently within the chosen area of musicology or ethnomusicology; show a command of both standard literature and writings at the current scholarly forefront of their chosen field; show the ability to apply musicological or ethnomusicological research methodologies rigorously and appropriately.

The subject requires the research for, and writing of, a 10 000-word dissertation on a topic approved by the supervisor and the coordinator.

On completion of this subject students should have developed • a capacity for independent critical thought • high-level cognitive skills • an openness to new ideas • the capacity for self-directed learning • the ability to plan work and to use time effectively • ability and self-confidence to comprehend complex concepts, and to express them lucidly whether orally or in writing.

Assessment

Two bound, typewritten copies of the dissertation are to be submitted for examination not later than the first day of the Semester 2 examination period. The final mark for this course will be determined solely by the dissertation (100%).
