Subject Description

On completion of this subject students will have a sound knowledge of issues central to the conduct of private instrumental and vocal teaching practice, including the role of the teacher; underlying philosophical issues; learning processes in music performance; planning and implementation of curriculum; various teaching methods and techniques; and resources for teaching. Topics include introduction to relevant philosophies of music education; principles of teaching and learning in music; curriculum planning and implementation; teaching methods and techniques; and evaluation and selection of teaching materials.

On completion of this subject students should be able to • extend their understanding of the nature of musical knowledge - its acquisition and processes · articulate philosophical and psychological theories pertinent to the teaching and learning of music performance • apply curriculum theory and the principles underlying curriculum development, implementation and evaluation to their professional practice • pursue independent knowledge of planning, procedures, methods and techniques in instrumental/vocal teaching • provide leadership in assuming the roles and responsibilities of instrumental and vocal teachers.

Assessment

Major assignment (70%); viva voce examination (30%).
