Subject Description | On completion of this subject, students will be able to analyse short pieces using various methods of analysis, including linear analysis, and will have formed a critical perspective of the variety of analytical techniques available. Students will learn how to • apply advanced analytic methods to the analysis of tonal and atonal music • evaluate a number of approaches to the analysis of western tonal classical music • articulate ways of understanding the cultural context of, and ramifications for, the development of western music analysis. |
Assessment | Regular analysis exercises (70%); end-of-semester project (30%). |
