Subject Description

A study of the social and historical significance of the operatic genre through a study of selected works, as well as the literature relating to the interdisciplinary nature of the genre and recent musicological research. The subject will cover an examination of some of the issues that relate to the interdisciplinary nature of opera alongside a study of selected works from the operatic genre with particular emphasis on their social and historical significance.

Assessment

Journal entries throughout semester (30%); end of semester essay of 2500-3000 words (65%); attendance and participation in class (5%).
