Subject Description | Students will study the representative works of Bach and the composers he admired, understand the working environments of musicians working in various German courts and free cities during the first half of the 18th century, comprehend the influences of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation upon religious music and become familiar with the small and large-scale genres and the various musical styles employed by German musicians in the composition of sacred and secular music. On completion of the subject, students should be able to • design a short recital program • demonstrate developing artistic qualities in the preparation of recital repertoire • perform the component works of a program with growing musical understanding • display a level of instrumental or vocal craft appropriate to the level of the repertoire presented. |
Assessment | One class presentation, date to be allocated in the first week of the subject (40%); Written Assignment of 2500 words due at the end of Week 10 (60%). |
