Subject Description

This subject examines the legal framework of government in Australia. Topics include the nature of public law; basic constitutional concepts; foundations of the Australian constitutional system; constitutional amendment; the judicature; the legislature; protection of rights; legislative power; Federal financial and economic framework; the Crown; the executive government; review of executive action; judicial review; administrative review; the Ombudsman; and freedom of information.

Assessment

A one hour, in class, closed book test during first semester (15%); research exercise consisting of written assignment not exceeding 3000 words OR oral presentation with written outline of arguments (30%); practical exercises (15%) AND final examination three hours (40%).
