Ten hours per week of independent work in which a research project is undertaken and a written report prepared under the supervision of an assigned supervisor

Subject Description

Students undertake a research project over the semester, thereby gaining experience in posing research questions, searching the literature and in using basic research methods for collecting and analysing data and in presenting the results in a competently written research project report. Regular meetings will be held with the supervisor during the semester for gaining advice on the study topic and technical matters. Material prepared in Research Methods (705-444) is expected to form an integral part of the final research report.

Generic Skills

On completion of the subject students should have developed the following skills and capabilities:

  • Critical thinking and analysis.

  • Ability to seek out, retrieve and evaluate information from multiple sources.

  • Understanding and lucid expression of complex concepts in written and oral form.

  • Time management skills.

  • Appreciation and implementation of the ethics associated with knowledge creation and usage.

  • Report writing skills.

Assessment

A 10,000 word research project report. However, the 5000 words of assignments produced for Research Methods (705-444) are expected to be refined and incorporated as part of the final report. Students must also orally present their projects in mid-semester. Although this mid-year seminar is not assessed, the report will not be accepted for examination unless a presentation has been made. Appropriate examiner(s) other than the supervisor will examine the final research report.
