Three hours of lectures per week plus practical work

Subject Description

Topics include the grading of complex sites; surface water drainage, management and disposal; land reclamation and the rehabilitation of degraded soils and sites; erosion controls; sporting and recreational facilities; and design of simple structures; Earthwork computation and site survey techniques.

On completion of the subject students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of site engineering issues.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of land reclamation and rehabilitation issues and techniques.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of techniques and coordination of site services and drainage.

  • Possess knowledge of emerging technologies in these areas and demonstrate the skills to critically assess these.

  • Display skills in the design, documentation and coordination of all aspects of site works.

Generic Skills

On completion of the subject students should have developed the following skills and capabilities:

  • Basic constructed drawing skills.

  • Basic mathematical skills.

Assessment

Written and graphic assignments equivalent to not more than 3000 words (60%) and a two-hour examination (40%).
