Subject Description | Topics covered are solar energy and the atmospheric/oceanic processes that generate weather and climate; the general atmospheric circulation and ocean currents; the coastal ocean; climate change: warm ages and ice ages; and relationships between humans and climate. On completion of this subject, students should comprehend the basic concepts of climate; and know how the climate system may be understood in terms of the solar energy input and its redistribution by atmospheric and oceanic processes. |
Assessment | Ongoing assessment of practical work in the form of short reports, written assignments and problem solving exercises totalling not more than 2500 words due during the semester (40%); a 2-hour written examination in the examination period (60%). |
