Subject Description

This subject conducts a review of nursing research over the last 30 years. The focus is on key areas of research, developments in methodology and impact on nursing practice and patient outcomes. The subject will profile key international researchers who have produced a body of work in a range of fields: health outcomes research, symptom management, vulnerable populations and supportive care.

Generic Skills

Students enrolled in this subject will:

  • develop an awareness of international quality research in nursing;

  • develop capacities for information seeking, retrieval and evaluation to examine a range of research activities to improve nursing practice;

  • explore the development of research programs from significant nursing researchers;

  • analyse the contribution of individual researchers to the development of knowledge, practice and leadership in nursing;

  • develop attitudes towards knowledge that include valuing truth, openness to new ideas, and ethics associated with knowledge creation and usage;

  • develop written and verbal communications skills to a high level

Assessment

1) One student-led tutorial

2) One 1-hour class presentation

3) One 4000-word written assignment

Specific readings selected by the subject coordinator will be made available to the students at the commencement of the subject either as a book of readings or on counter reserve in the library.
