Subject Description | There are three periods of elective study in the physiotherapy program: Global, Clinical and Professional Development electives. The key objectives of these units are to provide students with the opportunity to broaden and deepen their experience of physiotherapy practice in a number of the following ways: the rationale of selected physiotherapy approaches to management; the application of physiotherapy management principles to health education and patient treatment; the role of other health professionals and members of the community in the outcome of physiotherapy management; the role of family, community members and Government instrumentalities in health education and patient care; to enable the student to appreciate the diversity and depth of physiotherapy as a profession; the social, cultural and political context of health care practice in the area; implications of resource differences and the need for planning; the use of initiative and improvisation in providing physiotherapy care; the need for consultation and planning. Placements for these electives are in a variety of settings including hospitals, community and educational organisations, sporting bodies and private practices. |
Assessment | Clinical examination (60%), Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) (40%). Students are required to reach a satisfactory pass in each of their elective placements based on the report by the supervisor and the presentation by the student. |
