Subject Description | This semester explores the context of medical practice: the organisation of health care plus the social and cultural factors that influence the scope and effectiveness of medical practice. Content areas to be covered include health, illness and culture; social determinants of health and illness; indigenous health; gender and disease; health structures; and ethical issues relevant to medical practice. Lectures will be complemented by five PBL tutorials. Students will learn history-taking in relation to the gastrointestinal system, as well as the skills of measuring and calculating BMI and waist-hip ratio, examination of the gastro-intestinal system and hand washing. |

Assessment | Written assignment of no more than 2500 words (30%); end-of-semester written examination of 2 hours (50% - hurdle requirement); performance-based assessment in the form of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) which includes direct observation of a clinical interview (20%) and physical examination (hurdle requirement). Hurdle requirement: 75% attendance at lectures, tutorials and practical classes and 100% attendance at clinical placements and field visits. |
