Thirty-three hours of lectures, twelve hours of practice classes and six hours of laboratory classes

Subject Description

Topics covered in this subject build on the basic knowledge obtained in statics, and are organised into 3 components: structural analysis; analysis of sectional behavior when subjected to a bending moment, axial force, shear force or torque; and buckling of elements.

Generic Skills

  • be able to clearly define the fundamental terms used in Mechanics of Solids

  • have the ability to apply knowledge of basic science and engineering fundamentals

  • view the obtained solutions as models with certain inbuilt assumptions and hence limitations

  • be ablve to critically compare results obtained from experimental studies with theoretically predicted values

Assessment

One 3-hour written end of semesster examination (75%) and practice classes and laboratory work (25%).
