Subject Description | Objectives: Students successfully completing this unit should develop an appreciation of the management of safety, project development and the profitability analysis of projects, sustainable development, and other managerial issues affecting the engineer. Content: Safety management including Hazard Analysis (Hazan) and Hazard and Operability (Hazop) studies. Project development including the stages of a project, how to carry out a feasibility study, estimation of capital and operating costs, profitability analysis of projects including comparison of alternative investment options, and simple accounting. Sustainable Development; professional ethics; the legal, environment and responsibilities of the engineer; management of innovation and intellectual property; project management and project planning networks; industrial relations; diverse management issues. |
Assessment | An assignment not exceeding a total of 3000 words plus accompanying tables and calculations (20%) and a final examination of three hours (80%). |
