183-213 Exploring the World of Jewish Literature

Usually 12.5 points of first year Arts subjects or permission of the subject coordinator.

This subject involves a review of Jewish literature from the Enlightenment to the present, featuring a variety of authors, genres and texts. One of the themes of the subject is the exploration of the role of metaphor, biblical and modern, within Jewish literature, with particular attention to the sacrifice of Isaac and other biblical metaphors. Students will also explore issues of Jewish literary bilingualism, and the representation of women and of non-Jewish figures in Jewish literature. Students should complete the semester with an understanding of the development of modern Hebrew and Jewish literature.

• develop the ability to conduct necessary work and preparation and deliver assignments on time and in the appropriate manner.

Written essays totalling 4000 words 80% (due during the semester), and class participation throughout the semester 20%.
