Subject Description

This subject examines the phenomenon of bi-/multilingualism, especially in the Australian context. It enables students to understand the choices made by speakers, the role of language contact in language change, and how languages are processed. It also introduces the political significance of languages.

Generic Skills

  • have developed skills in abstracting theory from practice;

  • have identified unstated assumptions determining an argument;

  • gain formed judgments from conflicting evidence;

  • have become open to new ideas and possibilities;

  • improved their oral and written communication.

Assessment

For 3rd year: a 3000-word essay 75% (due at the end of the semester) and a 1000-word class paper 25% (due mid-semester). For 4th year: a 3000-word essay 60% (due at the end of the semester) and two 1000-word class papers 20% each (due mid-semester and at the end of the semester).
