Subject Description

This subject will examine the ways in which women fit into global politics. It will show how taking account of women changes and enriches the understanding and practice of global politics. It will consider the ways in which feminist theorists have 'gendered' the study of international relations. Feminist ideas and women's experience in the following areas will be included: nationalism, cultural relativism, multiculturalism, citizenship, fundamentalism, ecofeminism, third world feminisms, the international sex industry, international law, women and armed conflict. On completion students should have developed the ability to criticize global politics as a field of study for the ways in which the experience of women is dealt with. The more nuanced view of international politics that the subject aims to develop will be useful to students working in the international arena.
