161-011 Manners of Meaning

Prerequisites	At least one first-year single-semester philosophy, anthropology or linguistics subject, or permission from the Head of School or subject coordinator.

Contact	Thirty-two contact hours per semester: two 1-hour lectures per week for the first 11 weeks and a 1-hour tutorial per week beginning the third week of semester
Subject Description	An introduction to central issues in the philosophy of language.
Generic Skills	improve their ability to reason about abstract issues, appreciation of linguistic complexity; improve their written and oral communication skills; have refined the critical skills necessary for original research.
Assessment	Two written assignments of 2000 words each, one due mid-semester 47%, the second due at the end of semester 50%, and tutorial participation 3%.
Prescribed Texts	A subject reader will be available.
