Subject Description

This subject considers the introduction of organised sport in the nineteenth century and its development as a major Australian institution. Through the exploration of particular events, the issues of class, race, gender and ethnicity and the formation of an Australian sporting tradition and its place in a global context will be discussed. On completion of this subject students will be able to appreciate the contribution that sport makes to the economic, social and cultural life of the nation.

  • show critical thinking and analysis through recommended reading, essay writing and tutorial discussion, and by determining the strength of an argument;

  • demonstrate understanding of social, ethical and cultural context through the contextualisation of judgements, developing a critical self-awareness, being open to new ideas and possibilities and by constructing an argument;

  • be able to communicate knowledge intelligibly and economically through essay writing and tutorial discussion.

Assessment

Issues paper of 1000 words 25% (due early semester) a 3000 word research essay 65% (due end of semester), class participation and presentation 10%.
