126-469 Post-Holocaust Literature

This subject is taught in German. Formerly available as 126-082. Students who have completed 126-082 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

37.5 points of second/third year subjects in German language. European studies students wishing to enrol in this subject would normally have completed 37.5 points of European studies at second/third year.

This subject analyses contemporary German prose and poetry springing from the immediacy of the Holocaust. Attention will also be given to the East German poet, Johannes Bobrowski, especially in the light of the significance of the Baltic intellectual tradition in his writings. Bobrowski's role will be highlighted as an example of the quest for peace and reconciliation, following the wartime apocalypse. On completion of the subject students should have acquired a detailed knowledge of a number of texts, a knowledge of both major and minor postwar German writers, and should have reached a good standard of analysis and critical evaluation.

• have developed skills in communicating knowledge intelligibly through oral presentations and essays in German.

A 1000 word class paper 30% (due during the semester), and an essay of 3000 words for 3rd year students, 4000 words for 4th year students 70% (due at the end of the semester).
