Subject Description

This subject covers topics such as exile and immigration in France; immigration policies and their direct impact on the migrant population; colonisation and decolonisation; racism and xenophobia; French identity, nationality and citizenship. On completion of this subject, students should be able to analyse critically and synthesise coherently the arguments in the current debate on immigration in France; discriminate among statements of evidence, interpretation, opinion and facts, regarding the definition and redefinition of the notions of culture, identity, and Frenchness; compare and reflect on similar issues of immigration in Australia. This subject will be taught in French.

Assessment

A 2 hour written test of 1,000 words in class 25% (due during semester). A take home exam of 1,000 words 25% (due during semester). An essay of 2,000 words 50% (due at the end of semester).
