Subject Description

This subject introduces systems of social division in contemporary China. The subject will examine some of the ways in which Chinese society is classified and analysed. Discussion will be based on original Chinese literary and scholarly sources in English translation, and academic scholarship produced outside China.

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

For 3rd year: a reflective essay of 2000 words 40% (due mid-semester), a research essay of 2000 words 50% (due during the examination period) and continuous tutorial participation 10%. For 4th year: a reflective essay of 3000 words 50% (due mid-semester) and research essay of 2000 words 50% (due during the examination period).
