110-427 Supervised Reading in Indonesian Studies

Note

Enrolment is subject to approval of the coordinator. Students should note that approval of a course of reading will be subject to availability of staff with expertise in the field concerned. Students can only take this subject once. In the first week of semester or earlier, eligible students interested in the subject must submit to the subject coordinator an initial plan in writing, outlining why they need this subject, what they wish to achieve from it, and a nominated supervisor.

Subject Description

This subject offers students the chance to undertake independent research in Indonesian and Malaysian studies in areas of interest to them for which supervision is available, and present the findings of their research in a scholarly manner. Topics might include Indonesia's history, ethnic groups, language, culture, polity, media, gender issues, middle classes, religion, and literature.

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire critical thinking and analysis skills through recommended reading, essay writing and tutorial discussion, and by determining strength of an argument;

  • be able to think in theoretical terms through lectures, tutorial discussions, essay writing and engagement in the methodologies of the humanities and social sciences;

  • acquire research skills through competent use of the library, and other information sources and the definition of areas of inquiry and methods of research.

Assessment

For 3rd year: an essay of 1000 words 50% (due mid-semester) and a final essay of 3000 words 50% (due during the examination period). For 4th year: an essay of 1500 words 50% (due mid-semester) and a final essay of 3500 words 50% (due during the examination period).
