Subject Description

As students progress in their language studies, the development of higher level language skills is essential. Students need to be able to understand the language of the modern media, in particular television and radio. This requires aural skills of a very high level and the acquisition of a particular type of vocabulary. This subject seeks to build on the reading abilities and the vocabulary acquired in 110-185 Chinese News Analysis that focus on written media and extend this to radio and television. This subject will acquaint students with current usage of the Chinese language through the study of contemporary programs. Their language skills will be enhanced by the thorough study of selected programs of current interests. In particular the study of scripts will increase their ability to understand and use journalistic Chinese

Generic Skills

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

A short listening comprehension test of 500 words 20% (mid-semester), a listening comprehension test of 500 words for 3rd year and 1000 words for 4th year 50% (at the end of semester), and continuous class work of 2000 words 30%.
