A 1-hour lecture and seven hours of language classes per week, including a computer laboratory class

Subject Description

This subject provides students with an opportunity to read and listen to authentic Japanese materials and learn to communicate on a range of topics. Students will learn a further 150 kanji (Chinese characters) and will be introduced to various aspects of Japanese culture. Computer laboratory instruction will support the curriculum.

  • written communication through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • time management and planning through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • public speaking through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • develop teamwork through joint projects and group discussions;

  • develop research skills through computer use of the library, electronic database and other information sources and the definition of areas of inquiry and methods of research.

Assessment

Four in-class quizzes of 200 words 8% (due throughout the semester), a 30-minutes listening test 10% (due late semester), an 8-minute speaking test 10% (due end of semester), a 5-minute short oral presentation 7% (due in first half of semester), a project assignment 14% (due throughout the semester), a written assignment 6% (due in second half of semester) and a 2-hour final examination 45% (during the examination period).
