Subject Description

This subject consolidates students' Japanese knowledge and enables communication in Japanese using an appropriate politeness level and style. Various reading materials will be introduced. Students will learn a further 150 kanji (Chinese characters). Students are also introduced to various aspects of Japanese culture. Computer laboratory instruction will support the curriculum.

  • attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • time management and planning through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • public speaking through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • develop teamwork through joint projects and group discussions;

  • develop research skills through computer use of the library, electronic database and other information sources and the definition of areas of inquiry and methods of research.

Assessment

Four in-class quizzes of 300 words 12% (due throughout the semester), a 30-minute listening test 10% (due at the end of semester), an 8-minute speaking test 13% (due mid-semester), a team project assignment comprising a written report of 1200 words and a 10-minute oral presentation 20% (taking place during semester) and a 2-hour final examination 45% (due during the examination period).
