Subject Description

In this subject, significant topics in Japanese society will be introduced through authentic texts such as articles from Japanese newspapers, magazines and the internet, and also through extracts of semi-naturally occurring conversations between Japanese native speakers. The subject focuses on Japanese traditional social events, and examines how they are interpreted and practiced in modern Japanese society. Students are encouraged to use web-based learning tools such as online dictionaries and machine translation in this process. Students will engage in activities such as discussion and essay writing focusing on changing social values in Japan. On completion of the subject, students should be able to gather information in a foreign language and have an understanding of how sociocultural factors influence observed phenomena.
