Formerly available as 110-107. Students who have completed 110-107 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

110-242 Japanese 2B or equivalent. New students who have had some prior experience with the language may not enrol unless they have taken a placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

In this subject, significant topics in Japanese society will be introduced through authentic texts such as articles from Japanese newspapers, magazines and the internet. The subject focuses on current trends and issues in Japanese society from cross-cultural perspectives. Students are encouraged to use web-based learning tools such as on-line dictionaries and machine translation in this process. Students will engage in activities such as discussion and essay writing. On completion of the subject, students should be able to use learning tools effectively and independently to decode authentic texts; and gain a sociocultural understanding on Japan.

• public speaking through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Two in-class composition tasks 20% (due mid-semester and late in semester), two in-class quizzes 16% (due mid-semester and late in semester), two oral tests 24% (due mid-semester and late in semester) and a 2-hour final examination 40% (due during the examination period).
