110-180 Standard Chinese 1A

Formerly available as 110-035. Students who have completed 110-035 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

Some knowledge of a Chinese dialect. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester or equivalent as determined by the coordinator.

Students must be concurrently enrolled in 110-120 Standard Spoken Chinese 1A.

This subject is an accelerated course for students who speak a dialect of Chinese but who cannot read or write Chinese characters or speak Mandarin. By the conclusion of this subject students should have reached approximately the same level as 110-145 Introductory Chinese 1B. They should be able to speak with acceptable standard pronunciation and read and write at least 600 characters, and write essays.

• acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

• acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

• acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

• show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing.

Homework 1000 words 20% (due weekly), short tests 20% (in week 6 and week 10), a 2-hour final examination 50% (during the examination period) and continuous class participation 10%.
