110-145 Introductory Chinese 1B

110-143 Introductory Chinese 1A and 110-144 Spoken Introductory Chinese 1A or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or taken a placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

110-146 Spoken Introductory Chinese 1B

This subject is an introductory course in Chinese for students who have completed 110-143 Introductory Chinese 1A and 110-144 Spoken Introductory Chinese 1A. By the conclusion of this subject students should be able to speak with an acceptable standard of pronunciation, and read and write approximately 600 Chinese characters.

• be able to recognise the principles of structural organisation in a communicative system;

• acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for class participation, revision and assignment completion;

• be able to engage in time-intensive and repetitive learning tasks to acquire the foundation for practical command of a complex system of written communication;

• attain knowledge of cultural practices in another system.

Two short tests 30% (one due mid-semester and one at the end of semester), a 2-hour final examination 60% (due during the examination period) and class participation 10%.
