A 1-hour lecture and three hours of language classes per week

Subject Description

This is an introductory course in Chinese for students with no previous knowledge of the language. By the end of this subject students should be familiar with the Pinyin system of romanisation and be able to read and write approximately 300 Chinese characters.

Generic Skills

  • be able to adapt to an unfamiliar system for communicating thought;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through class preparation, revision and assignment completion;

  • acquire foundation abilities to function in a cross-cultural environment.

Assessment

A 2-hour examination 60% (due during the examination period), two short tests 20% (due mid-semester and late semester), ongoing vocabulary tests 10% and class participation 10%
