Students who have completed Standard Chinese 1B prior to 2002 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

110-120 Standard Spoken Chinese 1A and as for 110-182 Standard Chinese 1B.

On completion of the subject students should develop a good knowledge of the Pinyin system of romanisation and be able to conduct conversation in Chinese on a wide range of everyday topics.

• acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

• acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

• acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

• show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing.

Listening comprehension tests 20% (weekly in class), a 30-minute final listening comprehension test 30% (at the end of semester), oral presentations 20% (weekly in class) and a 10-minute final oral test 30% (during the examination period).
