Subject Description

In this subject students should learn to hold sophisticated discussions in Indonesian about issues ranging from matters of everyday life to historical developments and social, political and cultural phenomena in Indonesia, and to express their ideas about these topics in speech and writing in standard Indonesian. Students should read a variety of Indonesian socio-historical, political and literary texts.

Generic Skills

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

Class participation 10% (ongoing); oral presentation for class discussion on assigned reading materials 10% ( during the semester); a written test in class 500 words or 600 words for postgraduate 10% (mid-semester); speech 10-minutes, 12 minutes for postgraduate 10% (mid semester), long essay 1,000 words or 1,700 words for postgraduate 20%; and final examination (two hours) 40% (examination period). Second and third-year students are required to attend a minimum of 80 per cent of all classes in order to be eligible to take the examination.
