Subject Description

In this subject students will learn to discuss, read and write with confidence about any topic, including those at a more abstract level. Students will also be presented with an overview of major current events and political and social developments in Indonesia. Students should acquire some familiarity with modern Indonesian literature through the reading of poetry and short stories.

Generic Skills

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

A 2-hour examination 50% (due during the examination period), a 5-minute oral examination 10% (due during the examination period), three essays of 500 words each 30% (due early semester, mid-semester and late semester) and continuous class participation 10%. Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of all classes in order to be eligible to take the examination.
