Subject Description

This subject introduces students to cultural, social and political life in Taiwan. The island's historical background will be outlined, as well as anthropological and ethnographic studies of Taiwanese society. Students should gain some general familiarity with a regional approach to Chinese studies, and will also be introduced to Taiwanese reflections on the region's present diplomatic situation in a global context.

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

A 800 word classpaper presented in class 15% (due in the relevant week and handed in one week after presentation), a 1200 word essay 30% (due mid-semester), a 2000 word essay 45% (due during the examination period) and tutorial participation 10%.
