110-049 Chinese Linguistics

110-029 Introductory Chinese 2B, 110-040 Chinese 2B or equivalent.

This subject forms a linguistic approach to Chinese. By the end of the subject students should know how to apply the principles of general linguistics to the analysis of Chinese; analyse some major linguistic characteristics of Chinese in the areas of phonology, morphology and syntax; conduct investigations into Chinese dialects; and transcribe Chinese material using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

• acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Written assignments totalling 2000 words 60% (due weeks 3, 5, 7 and 9), and a 2-hour final examination 40% (due during the examination period).
