110-042 Standard Chinese 3B or a substantial secondary education in Chinese in a Chinese-speaking environment or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

This subject is an advanced course in Chinese language and literature for students who are literate in Chinese. At the end of this course, students will be familiar with the development of modern Chinese literature (1918-1949) and of classical literature (Spring and Autumn to Sui) and the major works thereof.

• acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

• show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

• acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

• acquire public speaking through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

In-class exercises 5% (due throughout the semester), oral presentation 20%, two assignments 750 words each 25% (due mid-semester and at the end of semester) and a final 2-hour examination 50% (during the examination period).
