110-123 Standard Chinese 2B, or VCE Chinese plus knowledge of a Chinese dialect or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Subject Description

This is an advanced subject in Chinese language and literature for students who are literate in Chinese. On completion of the subject students should have some knowledge of modern Chinese literature, be familiar with Chinese current affairs and be able to write Modern Standard Chinese in an acceptable style.

Generic Skills

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

A 1-hour composition test 20% (mid-semester), a 10-minute oral examination 10% (during the examination period), a 2-hour examination 60% (during the examination period), ongoing class work 5% and ongoing class participation 5%.
