106-032 Novel and Film

Usually 12.5 points of first year English.

This subject will teach students how to read films and novels in some detail - and in relation to one another. Students who complete this subject successfully will have an understanding of the formal and technical differences between the novel and the film, some of the techniques of reading the apparatus of mainstream films, and the way films and novels relate to society.

• apply new research skills and critical methods to a field of inquiry;

• develop critical self-awareness and shape and strengthen persuasive arguments;

• communicate arguments and ideas effectively and articulately, both in writing and to others.

An essay of 2000 words 50% (due mid-semester) and an essay of 2000 words 50% (due at the end of semester).

A subject reader will be available from the University Bookshop. Unless specified, any edition of the following texts is acceptable:
